Sonoma County Released Inmates
A Sonoma County release record starts with one plain fact: the person is no longer in Sonoma County Sheriff's jail custody. That fact is narrower than many searchers expect. A person can leave the Main Adult Detention Facility or North County Detention Facility because of bond, time served, a court order, a local sentence ending, a dismissal, a transfer to CDCR, a move to another county, a federal transfer, or an immigration arrest backed by a judicial warrant process. The right record depends on that path.
The Sheriff operates the county jail system through the Detention Division. The public jail search is useful, but its official landing page says the data covers people booked into the Sonoma County Jail who are in custody at the time of search. That current-custody language is the key Sonoma distinction. If a person drops off that search, the next proof may be the Sheriff's release record, the Sonoma Superior Court case, California VINE, CDCR CIRIS, BOP, ICE ODLS, or a supervision record.
Sonoma County Release Paths
Release type controls where the record goes next. A bond release keeps the court case alive. A time-served release can depend on custody credits. A state-prison transfer moves the active custody record to CDCR. A person released to parole, PRCS, mandatory supervision, or probation may be out of jail but still under a supervising agency. The jail record proves the custody exit; the court or supervision agency explains the legal status after that exit.
| Release path | What it means | Where to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or bail | The person leaves jail while the criminal case continues. | Sheriff release record and Sonoma Superior Court case portal. |
| Time served | The jail stay satisfied the local custody term or court order. | Court minute order, judgment, custody-credit entry, and Sheriff record. |
| County supervision | The person is released to probation, PRCS, mandatory supervision, or a jail alternative. | Sonoma County Probation and the court case. |
| State transfer | The person left the county jail for CDCR custody or parole processing. | CDCR CIRIS, CDCR records, DAPO, and BPH where relevant. |
| Federal or ICE transfer | The Sheriff no longer holds the person, but another custody system may. | BOP locator, ICE ODLS, federal court, or the Sheriff transfer record. |
Sonoma County Release Record Fields
A release record is different from a roster result. The roster result observed from the Sonoma jail search can show name, age, arresting agency, and booking number while the person is in custody. A requested booking or release record can be broader, subject to legal limits. California Government Code section 7923.610 supports public access to specified arrest facts, but it does not require Sonoma County to publish a rolling release list online.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Full name and aliases | Identity used in the booking system, when releasable. |
| Booking number | The most precise county jail identifier for a request. |
| Arresting agency | The agency that brought the person into custody. |
| Booking date and charges | Why and when the person entered the jail record. |
| Release date and time | When Sheriff custody ended, if maintained and disclosable. |
| Release reason | Bond, cite/release, court order, time served, transfer, or another lawful authority. |
| Hold or transfer note | Another county, CDCR, BOP, ICE, warrant, or detainer information when releasable. |
A sealed, juvenile, active-investigation, safety-limited, or medically restricted record may not show every field.
Obtain Sonoma County Release Records
The Sheriff's Report/Public Records Request Form is the main fallback when a released person no longer appears in the online jail search. The request should be narrow. Ask for records showing the date, time, and reason for release from Sonoma County Sheriff's custody, and include the booking number when known. The page says a response should be provided within 10 days, a fee may be required, and payment must be received before a document is released.
- Collect the full name, date of birth if known, booking number, arresting agency, approximate booking date, and facility if known.
- Use the Sheriff public-records request route and state the release record sought in neutral terms.
- Contact Sheriff Records at (707) 565-2204 or Sheriff-CIB@sonomacounty.gov for fee questions.
- Use the Sonoma Superior Court record if the needed proof is disposition, sentence, custody credits, probation, dismissal, or post-conviction relief.

Sonoma Court Release Records
Court records are often the most stable record after a person leaves jail custody. The Sonoma Superior Court Case Portal can identify the case path, while the court's portal disclaimer says online information is a public service and not the official record. For official copies, the criminal clerk record route matters. The court's Criminal Division lists in-person copy access at the Hall of Justice, 600 Administration Drive, Room 105-J, Santa Rosa, during posted clerk hours.
The court file can show disposition, judgment, sentence, custody credits, probation orders, dismissal, sealing, or post-conviction relief. That is why a Sonoma County released inmate may be easier to explain through a court record than through the live jail search. The jail record shows the person left Sheriff custody. The court record explains why that custody ended and whether supervision or a future hearing remains.
Note: The court generally responds to criminal-record requests in a week to ten days, according to the Criminal Record page.
Find Released Sonoma County Inmates
The strongest search path starts with the Sheriff's current-custody system and then moves outward. A person found in the live jail search is not confirmed as released. A person not found is not automatically released. The absence could mean release, transfer, spelling variation, alias use, a stale search, a sealed record, or a booking outside Sonoma County.
- Open the Sheriff's Incarcerated Person Search and agree to the official current-custody disclaimer.
- Search by last name or booking number in the Sonoma jail search application.
- If the person is not listed, check the Sonoma Superior Court case for a release order, sentence, dismissal, or transfer clue.
- Use California VINE for a custody-change signal when the record is active in the notification system.
- Use CDCR CIRIS, BOP, ICE ODLS, or another county only when the jail release may have been a transfer.
- File a Sheriff records request when documentary release proof is needed.
California DOC Release Search
CDCR's California Incarcerated Records & Information Search, or CIRIS, is the state-prison path. It is not the first tool for a person who simply bonded out of the Sonoma County Jail. It matters when a Sonoma case led to a state-prison sentence, a CDCR transfer, parole supervision, or a Board of Parole Hearings matter. CA.gov's CIRIS service description says public results include fields such as name, CDCR number, age, current location, commitment counties, admission date, and BPH dates or outcomes for current CDCR custody records.
| Search item | Best use | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| CDCR number | Most precise state-prison identifier. | It will not exist for ordinary county jail releases. |
| Name | Useful when no CDCR number is known. | Compare age, commitment county, and admission date. |
| Current location | Shows state custody location if public and current. | Does not prove a county jail release by itself. |
| BPH information | Relevant for parole eligibility or suitability matters. | A hearing date is not the same as a release date. |
The CA.gov CIRIS service page is shown in the screenshot capture for Sonoma release context at California Inmate Records and Information System.
That state tool is best read beside the Sonoma court case and the Sheriff transfer record when the person moved from jail to prison.
Sonoma County Recent Releases
No official Sonoma County Sheriff 24-hour, 48-hour, or 72-hour release feed was found in the detention resources, jail search application, arrest log, or data portal pages reviewed for this build. The nearest official online jail tool is the current-custody search. The 24-Hour Releases and 72-hour pages therefore focus on replacement workflows: current-custody check, VINE, court record, Sheriff records request, and transfer-system search.
The Sheriff's arrest log can be useful for an arrest or citation timeline, but it is not a release log. The jail population dataset can help with facility context, but it does not confirm a named person's release. Sonoma's public-data angle is valuable only when it is kept in its lane.
The Sonoma County data portal's jail population dataset gives custody-count context for MADF and NCDF.
Use it for facility context, not as a person-level release confirmation source.
Sonoma Post-Release Supervision
Post-release supervision in Sonoma County can mean CDCR parole, Sonoma County probation, PRCS, or mandatory supervision. Parole is state supervision after prison release through CDCR's Division of Adult Parole Operations. PRCS and mandatory supervision are local probation-supervised paths tied to California sentencing rules. Traditional probation is a court order. The Post-Release Supervision page separates these routes, but the main search point is simple: a person may be out of jail and still required to report, follow conditions, or return to court.
Sonoma's Adult Probation Division describes supervision work with treatment providers, mental health professionals, law enforcement, social services, and related agencies. The Adult Probation Handbook identifies PRCS and mandatory supervision as post-custody categories. This local reentry layer is why release should not be read as case completion.
Sonoma Release Notifications
California VINE can provide custody-status checks and notifications for participating California records. It is useful before release or during an active custody record. CDCR victim-services material adds a Sonoma-relevant handoff: county jail status can be tracked through VINE, and VINE can be used to register for notification of transfer to CDCR, but state-prison notification later uses CDCR's victim-services registration.
Federal and immigration searches are separate. BOP's locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present and can show a past release date or "not in BOP custody" context for federal cases. ICE ODLS covers people currently in ICE custody or in CBP custody for more than 48 hours, subject to its limits. Sonoma's Sheriff immigration page says immigration officials are not allowed in the jail except to make an arrest, the office does not honor immigration holds, and it acts only on warrants issued by a judge. That local policy makes the transfer record important.
Sonoma Custody Lookup Differences
Different systems answer different release questions. Matching the system to the custody path prevents a common error: treating a live roster as a release archive or treating a federal locator as a county jail record.
| System | Best question | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Sonoma jail search | Is the person currently in Sonoma County jail custody? | It does not provide a public release archive. |
| Sheriff release record | When and why did Sheriff custody end? | It may not show full court disposition. |
| Sonoma Superior Court | What happened in the criminal case? | It may not show real-time jail movement. |
| CDCR CIRIS | Is the person in state prison or tied to CDCR custody? | It is not for ordinary county bond releases. |
| California VINE | Can a custody change be checked or tracked? | It is not a complete historical release-record archive. |
| BOP or ICE | Did another federal or immigration system take custody? | It does not confirm every Sonoma County jail release. |
Sonoma County Detention Facilities
Sonoma's adult detention map has two Sheriff facilities. The Main Adult Detention Facility is the primary medium and maximum security jail at the Hall of Justice complex. North County Detention Facility has a lower-security and work-detail identity, with local history tied to the former Santa Rosa Army Airfield and later honor farm use. Both share the same release-confirmation pattern: current-custody search while confined, then Sheriff records, court records, VINE, supervision records, or transfer systems after release.
- Main Adult Detention Facility handles pretrial, sentenced, warrant, hold, and transfer custody in the county jail system.
- North County Detention Facility is part of the same Sheriff detention system and is tied to minimum-security and work-detail custody history.
Sonoma Release Record Terms
Short definitions help separate jail release from broader legal status.
- Discharge
- The end of a custody or supervision term, depending on the agency using the word.
- Time served
- A release after the court or jail credits custody time toward the sentence.
- Parole
- State supervision after a prison release through CDCR DAPO.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision handled locally by Sonoma County Probation for county cases.
- Detainer
- A request or legal hold from another authority. Sonoma's local immigration policy distinguishes holds from judge-issued warrants.
